Licorice (عرق السوس)
Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is a perennial herb native to parts of Europe and Asia. It produces purple to pale blue flowers, pinnate leaves, and elongated roots that contain glycyrrhizin — a sweet-tasting compound significantly sweeter than sugar.
Licorice root has a long history of use in traditional medicine and as a flavoring agent. It has been used for treating coughs, digestive complaints, and other ailments. In the confectionery industry, licorice root extract is used to manufacture licorice candy and herbal teas.
High consumption of licorice may cause side effects due to the presence of glycyrrhizin, which can lead to elevated blood pressure and other health risks if consumed excessively.
